My Interview with Realm Lovejoy
Second Run Reviews: Henge is based on the King Arthur legend. How did the legend and actual history influence way you shaped the story?
Realm Lovejoy: I changed a lot of things about the legend such as making it modern, making the characters teens, changing their relationships with one another, and overall plot focus. However I really wanted to honor the legend since I am a fan of it. I incorporated as many of the iconic aspects as possible: Prince Arthur needing guidance, Merlin being a genius, Morgan le Fay being dark and complex, and keeping the settings such as Camelot and Avalon, and other key elements such as Excalibur. The Arthurian legend is full of drama, so I definitely wanted Henge to be full of drama, adventure, and action too.
Second Run Reviews: What sets Henge apart from other retellings/reimagingings of the legend?
Realm Lovejoy: I think the fact that it’s set in modern time sets it apart. I can’t think of a retelling that does that though I’m sure it must exist somewhere. Another aspect that’s different from other retellings (that often star Arthur or Merlin) is making Morgan le Fay the protagonist (she if often portrayed as a villain) while maintaining her good/evil duality that I think makes her fascinating.
Second Run Reviews: What three books do you most often recommend?
Realm Lovejoy: I’m currently trying to convince my fiancé to read The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien since I believe that everyone must read it or at least make an attempt to read it. It’s such a fantasy classic. I generally always recommend everyone read anything by graphic novelist Tezuka Osamu and author Cormac McCarthy.
Second Run Reviews: If you had to go back and do it all over, is there any aspect of your novel or getting it published that you would change?
Realm Lovejoy: Since I’m working for myself, I only publish when I’m satisfied and feel that I’ve done my best. That said, if I had the resource to do so, I dream of having an elaborate hardback version with lots of colorful artwork… maybe someday!
Second Run Reviews:What else would you like to say to your readers and fans?
Realm Lovejoy I’d like readers to know that the paperback comes with around 15 illustrations by me in case they are interested in art! And I hope everyone enjoys reading Henge!
