Today I’m welcoming author Tiffany Daune to In the Spotlight. She was lucky enough to attend the granddaddy geek convention of them all, San Diego Comic-Con, this past summer. I am jealous she got to attend. And her post makes all the more excited for ICON 40 next month here in Iowa.
A Comic-Con Newbie
By Tiffany Daune
So this was my first year attending San Diego Comic-Con and I have to say, I’m addicted! From celebrity panels to cosplayers galore, I want more! Our son is actually the cosplayer in our family and though I desperately wanted to show up as Effie Trinket from The Hunger Games, between edits for book two and getting ready for the China release for Coral & Bone, I dropped the ball. That said I did help my son transform into a kickass Daryl Dixon. I have to say, my favorite part of a zombie apocalypse survivor’s costume is distressing the clothes! I’m sure the neighbours thought we were a little cuckoo grinding his clothes into the garden and tossing the boots against the stones, but hey, it was worth it.
Once there, we had a blast, shuffling through the endless crowds and checking out all the amazing displays; my favorite being AMC’s Walking Dead booth, complete with bloodthirsty zombies. My husband, the Lego buff in our family, stood in line for four hours to win a coveted Superman Lego set, while I waited to spin a wheel for free books. It’s a beautiful kind of insanity, but Comic-con is a place where everyone, despite the crowds, is happily lost in their fandom bliss. So what am I planning for next year? Well, I’ve registered for passes, so hopefully, the odds will be in our favor and we will attend in 2016. And who knows, maybe there will be some pictures of Effie to share.
