In the Spotlight with Eric Matheny
Welcome to Second Run Reviews, Eric! Thank you for being In the Spotlight. I appreciate you stopping by and answering a few questions. So let’s get things started.
In a tweet (140 characters or less), tell us a bit about yourself.
Former Miami prosecutor currently a defense attorney. Married for 7 years, 2 great boys. Love to write.
Impressive. Those boys must keep you very busy!
Please tell a bit about your journey to becoming a published author. What’s been the best things about it and the worst?
I started writing seriously when I was 21. I’ve probably written 10 full length manuscripts. Received a lot of rejections. Publishing The Victim has been a dream but that only comes after years of perfecting the craft.
Well, congratulations on finishing it and achieving one of your dreams. That’s quite a feat.
Tell us a bit about your latest release. What inspired you to write it? Why should fans of Second Run Reviews consider reading it.
The Victim is a fast-paced legal thriller full of mystery, technical accuracy, and suspense. I was inspired to write it after hearing about an old college classmate who was sentenced to prison for a DUI homicide. Made me think, what if he had gotten away with it? The Victim is perfect for fans of your classic legal thriller—courtroom drama, interesting characters, and plot twists you won’t see coming.
I know that I have a few fans out there who love legal mysteries. I hope they check it out.
What types of books do you enjoy reading the most? What three books to you find yourself recommending to your fans over and over?
Those authors are all new to me. Thanks for sharing!
What is your current obsession? Any secret obsessions you would like to share?
I was recently in Vegas and fell in love with blackjack. I downloaded it on my phone and play about 100 hands a day.
There is some kind of zen there playing 100 hands a day! I hope you win the jackpot some day and can spend your free time writing.
Any last thoughts or wise words you want to pass along?
Reading is the greatest form of entertainment in the world. It stimulates the imagination, creating such a personal experience. It’s unlike film or television because your mental interpretation of the story is different than anybody else’s. I know The Victim scene-by-scene, how it plays out in my mind. But for you the sights and surroundings are tailored to your own experiences. It is unlike anything else and I hope that no matter how technologically advanced we become, we will never lose the love of reading.
Agreed. Reading is awesome and I can’t wait to see where your novels take readers next, Eric. Good luck with The Victim and all your future releases. I hope you’ll return to Second Run Review sand tell us about your next release.
Synopsis: Anton Mackey is a man with everything. At least, he seems to be on the surface. He has a rising career as a private attorney, a lovely wife, a beautiful daughter; he and his family live in an idyllic neighborhood that most people dream about. Sure, there are troubles that plague this family, the same as any other, but all in all things are looking up. Life is good, and the future is better.
Except Anton has a past, too, and something has been looming, bearing down on him from that history, just waiting for the chance to strike. Soon, everything will change, and the life he’s struggled so hard to build will come crashing down around him.
And the worst part of it all: Anton Mackey has no one to blame but himself.
