One of my goals this year has been to work out more. Perhaps I should hire you as my trainer. 🙂

Please tell a bit about your journey to becoming a published author. What’s been the best things about it and the worst?

I didn’t tell anyone I was writing a book until it was almost done. Everyone can talk about writing a book, but having the guts to finish it and actually put it out there is an entirely different thing.

The best was going into a restaurant and seeing a woman I didn’t know reading my book. The poor lady thought I was attacking her when I yelled, “Where did you get that?” She didn’t believe I had written it.

The worst has been the first bad review I had published on Amazon, heartbreaking. Hard to have your work criticized but I honestly agree with the bad reviews and will try to be a better writer in my next project.

in the spotlight question

I hate writing negative reviews as a blogger. While I find them easier to write, I know that a lot of blood, sweat and tears goes into each book I read. So I try to make sure that my critical reviews specifically state what I didn’t like. And agree, negative reviews can be just as helpful as positive ones to me as a reader!

Tell us a bit about your latest release, The Moral Line. What inspired you to write it? Why should fans of Second Run Reviews consider reading it.

I have always been interested in prostitution and the hate it brings out in people’s opinions. I think it is important to know that many women do this willingly because they actually like the work. I also feel that for other people to tell a woman what she can and can’t do with her own body is ridiculous when it doesn’t affect them. And so much of the time paid for isn’t sex; it is companionship, something all humans are looking for in life. The book is about human connection, something we are all looking for.

in the spotlight question

Wow, your novel sounds so powerful. I’m intrigued to learn more!

What types of books do you enjoy reading the most? What three books to you find yourself recommending to your fans over and over?

I am a huge Sartre fan and think everyone should read Nausea. Hemingway is such an artist and I reread his novels every year. And Steven King can’t be beat for visualization.

Ooo, good recommendations. I read Hemingway in college and was blown away. He packs so much into one sentence you could spend a week unpacking it.

What is your current obsession? Any secret obsessions you would like to share?

I am always longing to be a better person and be a better friend and fellow human being. I love to travel and plan to take a couple of weeks driving around the US just meeting people this summer. Trying to figure out how to make it happen.

in the spotlight question

Well, if your travels bring you to eastern Iowa, please look me up. I’ve got a great coffee spot in town and a great wine location as well.

Any last thoughts or wise words you want to pass along?

Don’t judge people who aren’t like you if they aren’t hurting you. We all have different needs in life, but the need to fill loneliness is within all of us.

That’s a beautiful thought, Vanessa. Thank you for sharing and thank you for being In the Spotlight this week. I hope you’ll return soon and let us know what you are up to. Safe travels and I’m serious…if you get to Iowa, look me up! I would love to meet you.

The Overview

Synopsis: After being rejected and left alone, Alexandria, finds herself going down a moral line. Slightly desperate for money, she takes a one-time ‘job’ as a paid for companion by a not so attractive but very nice wealthy man. Is getting paid to be in the company of men really such a bad thing if it feels good? She falls into a world of clients that are wealthy, powerful, successful men with fancy cars and country club lifestyles. But she sees the fragility in all of these men, the loneliness and need for acceptance that is the human condition.

Alexandria becomes ‘Catherine’, a high-end escort with a beautiful laugh who finds the goodness and attractiveness in all men, falling in love with all of her clients just a little. By accepting these men and seeing the goodness in them, she pleases these men in many ways. Is it possible by pleasing others maybe Alexandria can find her true self and find happiness?

  1. The Moral Line sounds fascinating! Thanks for sharing about it. And thanks for sharing about your writing journey. I love your comment about it taking guts to actually finish a book and put it out there for everyone. I completely agree with that! And kudos to you for doing it. I also like your thoughts on negative reviews. It takes a tough skin to be an author but that you can take that criticism and improve your craft – that’s impressive. I also really like what you said about not judging people. That’s good stuff!
