Living the Life of a Professional Fangirl

by Jolene Buchheit, author and professional fangirl (in her dreams)

If being a fangirl were a profession, I would be a wealthy woman. There are so many talented actors whom I immensely enjoy watching. Some of them I have had the pleasure of stalking… er… meeting in real life.

A few years ago, following my obsession with The Mortal Instruments books by Cassie Clare, I was able to attend the movie adaptation cast appearance at the Mall of America as part of their media tour. Walking through the autograph line gave me such a thrill as I was able to compare tattoos with Kevin Ziegers (who plays Alec), Lily Collins (who plays Clary) complimented my cosplay, and Jamie Campbell Bower (who plays Jace) offered to deliver our gift to Cassie Clare (the amazing author) who couldn’t make it due to having pneumonia. The whole experience was surreal and made me hunger for more interactions, it also made me appreciate watching the movie much more.

Later that year, I attended another mall tour to meet some of the supporting actors for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Sam Claflin (who plays Finnick Odair) gave me a high five when he first got on stage and told us he wears Paco Rabonne cologne that looks like a trophy when we went through the autograph line. It smelled so good in case you were wondering. Bruno Gunn (who plays Brutus) actually recognized me from tweets we had exchanged on Twitter and that was unbelievable. Meta Golding (who plays Enobaria with the pointy teeth) and Jena Malone (who plays Johanna Mason) were so much smaller in person than they appear on the screen, but were both so kind. Watching the premiere was much different having met (and smelled) the actors beforehand. If you ever have the opportunity to attend a mall tour, go!

My favorite close call is the actor I have not met, but have seen in person. Josh Hutcherson (who has starred in Bridge to Terabithia, Zathura, and as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games series) came to speak at a local college about Bernie Sanders and I was able to attend. Though he was quite a distance from me, I still count it among my fangirling adventures.

Last fall, I was able to meet Misha Collins (who plays Castiel on Supernatural) when he came to our town stumping for Hillary Clinton. We didn’t really get to have a conversation, but my head landed on his shoulder while trying to take a selfie with him while he signed a book for someone else. I would have passed out if he would have had Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki with him. I guess I will just have to go to a Supernatural convention to meet them or stick with having their standees with me at my author tables.[Watch Jolene’s Periscope of Misha’s visit to Cedar Rapids]

The next day, Danai Gurira (who plays Michonne on The Walking Dead) came to the school where I work to talk about the power of our vote and I was able to talk with her one-on-one for a few minutes. She posed for a picture with me and my hands were shaking. Those two days were my favorite of the whole school year to say the least.

All of these experiences were unique and amazing in their own way, but none compare to my favorite fangirl encounter from when I met Theo James (who plays Four in The Divergent series). I was attending the Red Carpet Premiere in Chicago waiting for the stars to arrive inside the movie theater. I glanced up and caught sight of the one and only Theo James who locked eyes with mine and took 9-10 steps straight to me. Everything else faded out of view, it was just the two of us as far as I was concerned. When he was a couple of steps in front of me, his arms went up and mine mirrored his. Without a word spoken we embraced. As I was inhaling his fresh, clean scent with my head over his shoulder, he spoke to me in his low English-accented voice saying, “I was going for a mouth-to-mouth kiss.” FANGIRL DOWN! I was in fangirl heart failure at the moment and stupid fell out of my mouth, “I’m a happily married woman!” Though the statement is true, my husband has assured me he would have granted me a pass. We both laughed and he happily signed my book before moving on to some friends near me. He took a selfie with us, but it was blurry and I was looking at him like I thought he was crazy.

So he offered to take another one so we could get a better shot. (Are you sensing the time he spent with me/us here???) We asked what cologne he wears. He told us he doesn’t wear any so I asked why he smelled so good to me. He smiled and informed us it’s all natural. I asked if maybe he wears a fragrant deodorant, and he said he thinks it’s the CVS brand. Apparently, his pheromones were pleasing to my senses! Much like his handsome face which I will remember forever from the moment our eyes had no room for anyone but each other.

If anyone hears of any fangirl work opportunities, please let me know. I have experience and would be more than happy to apply. Meanwhile, if anyone wants to fangirl with me, find me on Facebook and let’s get to it!

Note from Terri: Jolene is definitely the ultimate fangirl. She travels to her signings with #FlatDean and I hear that #FlatCas may be making appearances this year as well. I hope my head accidentally falls on #FlatCas’s shoulder at Imagine Other Worlds with Authors event later this year!
