What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in your life

by Patti Larsen

Life lessons can come in the oddest shapes and sizes, at the least expected times and with the whisper of a gift or the thunder stroke of the Universe taking the snow globe of your existence and giving it a hearty shake.

I’ve experienced all of the above. Have been stubborn enough to ignore road signs and guidance and finally forced into change, but I’ve happily learned from every single shift.

Lesson #1: I am good enough. As a writer, as a person, as a woman, as a friend and family member. My efforts are exactly what are required at any given time.

Lesson #2: Saying no doesn’t mean the world will end. In fact, saying no when it feels right can actually make things better. I’ve had to learn to say it, choked on it a few times around guilt and fear, but ultimately spoke my truth and was stronger for it.

Lesson #3: Saying thank you and not qualifying with an excuse. This was a New Year’s Resolution I’ve carried forward for many years now. How often are we given a compliment only to downplay it because we don’t feel worthy? (See Lesson #1)? By accepting, I’m not only giving myself a gift, but I’m validating the expression of the giver. Win-win.

Lesson #4: I don’t care what you think and I’m going to do what I want. Because, ultimately, it’s my life, not anyone else’s. Other people’s shoulds, coulds and why don’t yous don’t count, especially when they make me feel sad, guilty or resentful. I’m in this life to be happy.

Lesson #5: Happiness is the truth. Pharell Williams is a genius, and his song, Happy, is so close to absolute perfection I sing it to myself when I need reminding why I’m here in this world, why I do what I do every day. The journey is the joy. We forget that, focusing on the goal. But, when the goal is achieved (or not), we either shift to a new goal or feel the utter disappointment that comes with “failure”. Instead, if we focus on the path, the sparkly, cheerful, amazing way laid out before us, nothing can get us down.

Lesson #6: There will always be another lesson. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My Review: Thank goodness for vacations! Family Magic by Patti Larsen drew me in from the first few pages. Because I was on vacation, stuck in airports and with no real schedule, i was able to tuck in and finish this novel in few days.

I immediately identified with Sydlynn’s struggle to be her own person and find her place in her family. It’s a struggle many of us go through and I felt Larsen hit the nail on the head when it came to Syd. She wasn’t overly whiny as she tried to fit in with her unusual family and the normal human world.

And while the reveal of who-dun-in in this story was a bit lackluster and somewhat obvious, Syd’s strong, well-rounded personality and her journey to find her place in the world pulled me through to the end.
