A Note from the Director

I set what I would consider a modest goal for myself every year—52 books or 20,000 pages read. I’ve made the 20,000 pages read goal the last four years and in those 80,000 plus pages, I’ve discovered (and rediscovered) some amazing authors. Some of them a big press authors and other are self-published or small press published authors. In the spirt of the New Year and helping you to build your TBR pile and spend your holiday gift cards, I present you with a few of my favorite authors.

A Few of My Favorite Authors

favorite authors 2015

Diana Gabaldon

Diana is responsible for getting me back into reading after spending four years in college as an English lit major slogging through classics that I rarely found rewarding. I read Outlander at the suggestion of a co-worker and have been hopelessly devoted to James Fraser and Claire Beauchamp since the first moment she discovered she had travelled back in time. This book has everything—love, romance, history, fighting, mystery and a bit of magic. And while the later books in the series are a bit bloated on the plot and character side of things, my heart remains true to the first book in the series.

About Diana Gabaldon

Diana Jean Gabaldon Watkins grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona and is of Mexican-American and English descent. She has earned three degrees: a B.S. in Zoology, a M.S. in Marine Biology, and a Ph.D in Ecology.

She currently lives in Scottsdale, Arizona .

Jim C. Hines

Jim C. Hines has two honors to his credit. He’s the first author I wanted to fangirl all over and had the opportunity to meet up close and personal. He’s responsible for my discovery of adult fairy tales that put a twist on the traditional Disney princesses. I still love the Disney princesses, but Jim’s princesses empower me to kickass and take names later.

About Jim C. Hines

Jim C. Hines' latest book is REVISIONARY, the fourth in his modern-day fantasy series about a magic-wielding librarian, a dryad, a secret society founded by Johannes Gutenberg, a flaming spider, and an enchanted convertible. He's also the author of the PRINCESS series of fairy tale retellings, the humorous GOBLIN QUEST trilogy, and the Fable Legends tie-in BLOOD OF HEROES. His short fiction has appeared in more than 50 magazines and anthologies. Jim lives in Michigan with his wife and two children. Online, he can be found at http://www.jimchines.com.

Dennis W. Green

Dennis is proof that there is a symbiotic relationship between bloggers and authors especially self-published and small press authors. Dennis’s book Traveler was one of the first small press published books I took a chance on. I have a soft spot for time travel/parallel universes (see Outlander above). I have been singing the book’s praises since I finished reading it back in 2013. I have been working hard to promote Dennis’s book to everyone I know that loves either time travel, science fiction or crime fiction. And Dennis has reciprocated, telling others about Second Run Reviews and promoting the blog when I promote his work. I love Dennis’s novels and am appreciative of everything he does to talk up my blog.

About Dennis W. Green

dennis w green headshot

Dennis Green is a writer, DJ, actor, sports announcer, web site editor, Masters swimmer, tech geek, husband, and dad, living and working in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His first book, "Traveler" is out from Mbedzi Publishing.

Dennis likes to say he lives life by these words from the great Robert Heinlein: "Specialization is for insects."

A master of many trades, as a DJ, his adventures were covered by newspapers from Anchorage to Los Angeles. As a writer, his work has been published in the small press, broadcast trade publications and the web site www.heartofamericatri.com. By day, he is the general manager of Iowa’s only jazz radio station, KCCK-FM. And if it’s 5:30 am, you can probably find him in the pool, working out with the Milky Way Masters swim club.

Jade Eby

Ultimately there would be no Second Run Reviews without the two people in this picture below (Jade is on the left, Erin is on the right). I bounced the idea of this blog off of both of them before I ever went live in December 2013. Some of my more difficult posts to write, I have shared with them before they ever went live.

Jade has been a constant source of information and support. She has promoted my In the Spotlight feature to her author pals, named a character after me and surprised me by listing me in the acknowledgements of her first novel. I am thankful I had the chance to work with Jade before she left the 9-5 job world to pursue her dream of being an author. She inspires me every day.

About Jade Eby

Once upon a time there was a little girl who fell in love with books then she grew up to write her own.

Jade has participated in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) seven times and enjoys copious amounts of coffee. When she's not writing, she enjoys trashy reality T.V. and reading everything she can get her hands on.

Mommy to two dogs and two naughty kitties, she feels like she might be on her way to having a zoo

So give your favorite author a warm hug and share some of your favorites. And don’t forget to tell us why you love them to the ends of the earth and back.
