Overall, this is a decent dystopian young adult love story. The characters are strong and surrounded by a fully realized dystopian Manhattan. This is a bit more than a Romeo and Juliet story which many of the other reviews reference. There are star-crossed lovers and there are 2 feuding families, but it goes a bit deeper than that. The 2 feuding families are actually political rivals with designs on making the Manhattan a better city by subjugating another group within the City. I found the political story the reason I kept reading the book. The love story was predictable and in the end, I wanted to learn how the politics are all gonna shake out.
What I loved most about the book was the vivid descriptions of Manhattan. It was very easy to imagine the city above the city.
Toxic Heart, Book 2 in this series, was released earlier this year. Check out this great review over on Bookish.
