I know I’ve mentioned it here few times before, but I am a huge movie goer. However, I am cheap and often wait until the latest releases are nearly available via Netflix and Redbox before seeing them. I love patronizing my locally run independent theatre, Collins Road Theatres. I like my movies cheap and my popcorn with real butter.

Here’s a round up of the movies I’ve seen in the last month.

I’m a sucker for animated films specially Disney or Pixar animated films and Big Hero 6 was no exception. This story about finding hope after devastating loss sucked me in from the opening minutes. And while the storyline surrounding the Bad Guy seems a bit underdeveloped, the tears in my eyes during the rescue sequences can’t be ignored.

Oh, and don’t forget to watch through the credits. There’s a nice cameo featuring Fred.

I’ll be honest; I hated this book when I finished reading it. Nothing good happened. The ending was frustrating and made me scream. It was the book I loved to hate. Now after reading Flynn’s other two novels, I can appreciate the genius that is Gone Girl. And seeing it on screen really made it all come together. Rosamund Pike does an amazing (HA!) job capturing Amy Dunne and all her craziness. Ben Affleck definitely pulled off Nick. After seeing the movie, I wasn’t surprised at all by Pike’s Oscar nomination. It’s takes talent to pull off Amy Dunne and Pike definitely has the skill.

If you haven’t seen the Honest Trailer for Gone Girl yet, you must head over to Screen Junkies and check it out.

Read my review of The Judge

The Judge

I saw The Judge on its last night at our local second run theatre mainly because Robert Duvall had received an Oscar nomination that morning. Overall, I was underwhelmed by the movie. The storyline was pretty straight forward and predictable. Far too many coincidences for my liking. It kind of felt like I was watching a Lifetime movie—lots of schmaltz, tears, apologizing and making up.

I’m not sure why Duvall received an Oscar nomination (his age?), I didn’t think his performance was all that ground-breaking. Personally, I loved Vincent D’Onofrio’s performance more. My heart ached for Glen and his never realized dreams.

Read my review of Interstellar

My Rating: Thumbs Up | Affiliate Link

Too brainy. Too sappy. Hard to hear. But I liked it. I’m not big on the violent, action packed science fiction movies and books. I want my science fiction with heart and Interstellar definitely delivers. And as for the complaints about the sound mixing, I didn’t mind it. Although we were warned by the manager that Nolan intentionally made some of the dialogue hard to hear. With a good sound system, you experience the movie in your bones when the dialogue was hard to hear. I found myself focusing on the music, or sound effects or the lack of both—trying to imagine what it would be like to be in that situation.

The only downside to the movie was the length. You definitely need snacks if you watch it in one go or take frequent breaks.

“I look forward–straight into the black. I always enjoy these few seconds in the theatre before a showing. When all is dark and I am waiting. I always feel a drop in my stomach wondering if when the lights of the showing come on I might find myself completely alone or wondering if the lights won’t come up all. I feel like I can’t be sure not in that first moment. I don’t know why I like it.” from Matched by Allie Condie

What movies have you seen recently? What Oscar-nominated films to do you hope to see before the Awards Ceremony?

I really want to see Intersteller. I watched a special about it on Science channel and how a lot of actual research went into everything involved, so I’m curious to see what it’s like. Gone Girl and Big Hero 6 are both on my list too but I find i’m not in much of rush for either of them.
