My Super Bowl is not your Super Bowl.

barbra streisand quote

Taken some place in Chicago before the Oscars in 2010. Yes, I drove 3 hours, with a friend, just to hold an Oscar.
I also got to hold an Emmy just a few months before that.

That’s right. I said it. I don’t care about the Broncos and the Panthers. (I had to Google that.) I didn’t even be tune in to watch the commercials. On the night of the big game earlier this month, I was making tea, snuggled up with the kitty-babies and tuning in to watch the Dowager Countess insult everyone. My Super Bowl is today and I’ve been prepping like a trained athlete.

Okay, so maybe sitting in a darkened theatre, munching on popcorn, downing Cherry Pepsi with 50 strangers isn’t actually the same workout that Peyton Manning or what’s his name…Cam Newton…go through. But it has involved some late night showings which is tough on a gal that loves to be in bed with a good book by 9 PM. But it’s close, right?

You see, I am a huge movie buff and this is my favorite time of year. I relish being able to go to the movie theatre almost every weekend and get lost in the dark. Next to the smell of fresh brewed coffee mixed with the smell of new books, watching a movie is one of my favorite experiences.

And I don’t mind waiting to see the Oscar nominees. It’s become kind of a challenge for me to see how many nominated movies I can see before the Oscars and then making my picks. I’ll admit I’m not very good at picks. I ignore the critics and vote with my heart. What movie made me laugh or cry or look at the world in a different way? Those are the movies that should win. Sometimes a box office hit and the really emotional movies cross paths and an Oscar is won for one if my picks. But that doesn’t happen often.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve ventured out to my favorite locally owned independent theatre to see The Martian, Room, Spotlight and Creed. Tonight you’ll find me at the theatre’s annual free Oscar party munching on popcorn, slurping down soda and enjoying the show. And then, like any good Hollywood starlet, I’m taking Monday off to sleep in and do nothing.

  1. I love watching the Oscars….even though traffic in LA is more horrendous with road closures. Plus, I used to work close by Holywood/Highland and it’s always a bear going to and from work. ?

I’m not crazy about watching the Oscar nominated movies but I have seen some. I mean, I’m not really crazy about watching Leo in The Revenant because I heard he eats real liver? Or something like that. No, my favorite part is the Red Carpet show because GOWNS, PRETTY GOWNS!!! I drool. I want. ?

I love that you really challenge yourself to see the movies before the big day, Terri! Happy Oscars viewing!

  2. I am a huge movie buff too but for some reason I’m not into the Oscars as much as I used to be. I’ll be watching them too anyway. I’m surios about Stallone and DiCaprio (Italian domination) 🙂 Hope you enjoy them!

  3. Not into the super bowl game either. Didn’t watch heh. But this, this is cool Terri! Yay for getting to hold an Oscar! I don’t really watch award shows either, but I would still be interested in taking a picture with one 🙂

    • A few years ago, there was this traveling deal and the closest they got to me was Chicago. Conveniently enough, my friend Erin has relatives that live there so we took a weekend girls trip. It was tons of fun.

  4. This is AMAZING! I love that you have a theater that does that, it sounds so fun! One of our theaters does show all the Oscar movies, and my parents always try to go. I am usually apathetic toward them- though I DO want to see The Martian, but I also want to read the book first. Oh, and ditto for Room. I also would not have been able to tell you who played in the Super Bowl- so borinG! I also probably wouldn’t have been able to tell you who won the Oscars either- except for Leonardo Dicaprio, because you’d have to live under a rock to have missed that one 😀 Hope you had a great time!!

    • I remember when Room came out and lots of my friends were raving about it.
I never got around to reading it and I imagine, after watching the movie, it was quite intense. The movie was good, but I wasn’t wowed by it.

I haven’t read The Martian yet, but once again lots of people are raving about the book including my husband (it was a Christmas gift for him). I’ll get around to it. It seems, based on my husband’s reaction, to be a sci-fi book that is right up my alley.

The Oscars were a tad boring this year, however, I was impressed by Chris Rock and how he handled the diversity issue. He made an excellent point though—why do we have separate men/women categories? The issue, as is usually the case, a much bigger thing than just the color of our skin!
