My Super Bowl is not your Super Bowl.
Taken some place in Chicago before the Oscars in 2010. Yes, I drove 3 hours, with a friend, just to hold an Oscar.
I also got to hold an Emmy just a few months before that.
That’s right. I said it. I don’t care about the Broncos and the Panthers. (I had to Google that.) I didn’t even be tune in to watch the commercials. On the night of the big game earlier this month, I was making tea, snuggled up with the kitty-babies and tuning in to watch the Dowager Countess insult everyone. My Super Bowl is today and I’ve been prepping like a trained athlete.
Okay, so maybe sitting in a darkened theatre, munching on popcorn, downing Cherry Pepsi with 50 strangers isn’t actually the same workout that Peyton Manning or what’s his name…Cam Newton…go through. But it has involved some late night showings which is tough on a gal that loves to be in bed with a good book by 9 PM. But it’s close, right?
You see, I am a huge movie buff and this is my favorite time of year. I relish being able to go to the movie theatre almost every weekend and get lost in the dark. Next to the smell of fresh brewed coffee mixed with the smell of new books, watching a movie is one of my favorite experiences.
And I don’t mind waiting to see the Oscar nominees. It’s become kind of a challenge for me to see how many nominated movies I can see before the Oscars and then making my picks. I’ll admit I’m not very good at picks. I ignore the critics and vote with my heart. What movie made me laugh or cry or look at the world in a different way? Those are the movies that should win. Sometimes a box office hit and the really emotional movies cross paths and an Oscar is won for one if my picks. But that doesn’t happen often.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve ventured out to my favorite locally owned independent theatre to see The Martian, Room, Spotlight and Creed. Tonight you’ll find me at the theatre’s annual free Oscar party munching on popcorn, slurping down soda and enjoying the show. And then, like any good Hollywood starlet, I’m taking Monday off to sleep in and do nothing.
