It’s been a rough couple of days. Waking up on Friday to the news in Dallas after the news from Minneapolis/Saint Paul the day before was a bit much. I didn’t want to get out of bed. I didn’t want to go to work. But then I thought of my clients and friends in Texas and hauled my ass out of bed and went to work.

And then, I went and saw Jenny Lawson.

I’ll be honest I had no clue last night who Jenny was beyond some blogger who has published 2 wildly popular books. (Both of which I bought and got signed.) But as I sat there listening and laughing I was reminded of two things.

  1. People who care for others with mental health issues are important. (I wrote a post about that once.)

  2. Even in the darkest hour, when our spoons might be limited, there is hope that it will get better.

As I waited in line clutching the books I purchased, anxious about the 30 seconds I would stand in front of Jenny, this famous blogger and famous author, I debated what to say to her. (I’m notoriously famous for not saying anything, but thank you for coming and reluctantly agreeing to have a photo taken if a friend pushes me.)

Once I got to the front of the line, I decided to share a cat story with Jenny. It’s a famous cat story in my corner of the world (like the vet techs know us by this story) and Jenny had shared a similar story during the Q & A portion of the event. As I told the story, we laughed and talked briefly about the strange eating habits of cats (I had one that licked pictures, one that likes to eat plastic grocery sacks (yes, the story was related to this) and another that eats rubber bands). As she signed Furiously Happy, she stopped a moment and said she had to draw me a cat and that my story was funny. I went home happy I didn’t stay in bed.

So Jenny, if you are reading this, I think I had extra spoons yesterday. Thanks for making my day (and thanks for the Twitter follow).

  1. Oh, that’s so amazing that you got to meet Jenny Lawson! I’m happy for you that you were able to go to her book event. I LOVE LOVE LOVE her and her books and her blog, and they often help me find spoons I didn’t know I had. Sometimes they’re only slightly tarnished teaspoons, but a spoon is a spoon 🙂

  2. What great story! We all need those little moments, especially with all that’s been going on lately! I was up all night with what happened here in Dallas watching the news and talking to my friend whose husband (also my friend) is Dallas PD and had been called in to help out. Thankfully he was home – had JUST walked in -when the madness began, but it still was a scary night with him running back into it! I sure hope we start to see some positive change soon! Great post and uplifting 🙂
