Reawakened by Colleen Houck
Reawakened by Colleen Houck seem right up my alley, right? With a bit of Egyptian mythology with a dash of mystery and romance, I was definitely looking forward to reading it after winning it via another blog.
Sadly, though, I was left disappointed. Reawakened is nothing but 400 pages of an insecure teenager whining about how she isn’t good enough and doubting that an Egyptian God loves her. “Hey, girlfriend, he’s sacrificing himself FOR you. He used his magic to take you like EVERYWHERE. At every turn, he’s moving to PROTECT you. I THINK HE LIKES YOU!” Oh, and the insta-love. But still, Lilly spends nearly all of the book waffling and doubting likeability for the ENTIRE novel.
If her whining weren’t enough, Lilly spends most of the novel playing the damsel in distress. The men (and Gods) are always coming to her rescue. I was hoping that as I moved through the story that perhaps Lilly would grow some balls so to speak and start a) believe in herself or b) rescue herself (or rescue the boys for once) without the help of magic. I wanted Lilly to grow some balls by the end, but no such luck.
I did enjoy the Egyptian mythology. The journey to various locations around Egypt is well done. I could feel the sand, the wind and the heat; the closeness of the tombs and tunnels Lilly and Amon journeyed through. I wanted to spend more time exploring the country and its many historical sites, but the plot didn’t allow much time for lingering and enjoying the view.
Overall, I did not enjoy Reawakened. While I don’t mind of a books heroines start off doubting themselves, I want their journey to be one of discovery and hopefully gaining strength and confidence to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and rescue themselves when the time calls for it.
