Waiting on Wednesday: Shameless Plug for ICON 39 and My Programming Idea

Back in January, I mentioned that I was planning to attend ICON 39 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I probably failed to mention that I am on the planning committee for ICON 39. I’ve only attended a total of 3 cons (2 ICONs and Chi-Fi 0), but I really had a blast at all three. And so far I’m really enjoying being on the planning committee for ICON 39. So a bit about ICON! ICON was started in 1975 and is the oldest and largest science fiction convention in Iowa. This year will be the 39th convention and our theme is The League of Extraordinary Gentlefen. The event is being held at the Cedar Rapids Marriott on October 31 through November 2. My role, beyond helping our wonderful ConCom plan the event, is to be a wonderful hostess for Megan Lara. Over the last couple of planning meetings we’ve talked briefly about programming and I’ve been tossing around some ideas. I thought I would throw my favorite idea out into the blogosphere to see if anyone out there was interested in attending the Con and helping out if the proposal would get accepted. My big idea: Being a Blogger: The Who’s, […]

Waiting on Wednesday: The Oscars Edition

Waiting on Wednesday: The Oscars Edition

“Waiting on” Wednesday is a weekly hosted by Breaking the Spine.A quick update on my trek through this year’s Oscar nominees! Since I originally posted, I’ve seen Philomena and 12 Years a Slave. I really enjoyed Philomena. Judy was marvelous in her portrayal of a mother in search of the son she unwillingly gave up. There were lots of tears in this movie for me! 12 Years a Slave was meh for me. There wasn’t enough character building so I wasn’t able to connect with anyone in the movie and the music, which is so often used to build on the moment and draw you in was either absent or dissonant to the scene it was distracting. Waiting on Wednesday: The Oscars Edition

Waiting on Wednesday: The Oscars Edition

“Waiting on” Wednesday is a weekly hosted by Breaking the Spine.I really like the idea of “Waiting on” Wednesday, but I can barely keep track of the books I have scattered about my house and stored on my Nook to participate in this event weekly. And then I thought, HEY! I’m waiting on the Oscars and consuming so many movies right now, in the spirit of “Waiting On” Wednesday, I could do an Oscars Edition. So here is goes! On Super Bowl Sunday, I posted about how the Oscars is my Super Bowl. In the months leading up to the big event, I train hard. I’m at the locally owned second run theatre at least once a week sometimes twice. I don’t mind seeing movies alone. On the 6th, I saw Her alone because the hubby wasn’t interested in watching a man fall in love with his computer. Personally, for me, Her was the best romantic movie I’ve seen in ages. So below is breakdown of the big nominations. I’ll be updating the last column with a Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down, the rating system here at Second Run Reviews, after I see a movie. If I think the movie […]
