An Exclusive Excerpt of Etched in Fire. A Fantasy Novel.

Today I’m happy to welcome Beth Hudson to Second Run Reviews. Beth started writing in third grade, but got sidelined by real life and just recently picked up her pen and started writing again. She published an illustrated chapbook, “Following Seas”, in 2008. This fall, Beth is happy to announce the release of her fantasy novel, Etched in Fire, which is being publish by Alban Lake Publishing. And today, Beth is sharing an excerpt of Etched in Fire with the fans of Second Run Reviews. Enjoy! The Overview Synopsis: Just as a barge enters Kaelennar, the city is attacked by an army of bloodthirsty esch. To protect fourteen-year-old Maelen Saltbearer, Gannet dresses her as a boy, and they take refuge with another family. Maelen wants to fight—she has some untested magical powers—but instead the children are to flee the city. The occupation of Kaelennar continues, and the children eke out a meager existence, unable to better their lot against the esch . . . until one day Maelen Saltbearer is caught, along with her friends, while smuggling children from the city. Tortured and left for dead, Maelen snaps. Torn between personal revenge and saving her people, Maelen has a decision […]

Exclusive Alternate Scene from Traveler by Dennis W. Green

Exclusive Alternate Scene from Traveler by Dennis W. Green

A Word from Dennis W. Green As a guy whose day job is about jazz music, “Lagniappe” is a word I’ve come across many times. It’s of Creole origin and means “bonus,” or “a little something extra.” The following is based on my original concept of the ending of Traveler. But it was pretty bleak, and eventually I decided I preferred something slightly more upbeat. But the Traveler saga is about parallel realities, and as I worked on the sequel, it occurred to me that this scene could still fit into the tale. You can enjoy this vignette now as an alternate ending for Traveler. But in Prisoner, you’ll get to see how it also fills out a part of the main story that takes place offstage. Or maybe I’m just to lazy to ever let a scene go to waste. A Little Lagniappe for Second Run Reviews   A Quick Review A Review Sneak Peek: Traveler is a science fiction mystery novel. Travis (Trav) Becker has the ability to travel between parallel universes and it turns out another version of himself is hunting down the other versions of himself. Of course, the big question is, Why? Sounds complicated, right? Well, […]

Cover Reveal + Giveaway: Prisoner by Dennis W. Green

I’m so excited today to share with you the cover of Prisoner by Dennis W. Green, the next book in The Traveler Chronicles series. I am a huge fan of Dennis’ first book, Traveler. It had the honor of being the first book I reviewed on Second Run Reviews. The covers of Traveler and Prisoner were designed by Clayton Chambers. Prisoner will be avalable for pre-order in July with a release date of August 1. I’m honored that Dennis chose my birthday as the release date of Prisoner! Dennis has been a frequent guest at Second Run Reviews. Besides checking out my review of Traveler, you should also check out his In the Spotlight interview from earlier this month and the great post A.R. Miller wrote about their collaboration with Rachel Eliason. And without further ado, here is the cover for Prisoner! About Prisoner From Dennis’s most recent newsletter: Prisoner takes place about a year after the events of Traveler. True to his word, Trav Becker has retired from dimension-hopping and settled into a normal life. At least, as normal as the life of a police detective can get. As the book opens, Trav is racing against time to solve […]
